Warm ears under a helmet that was never sized for a beanie

Pull a knit beanie under a helmet and it bunches, pushing the shell up off your forehead. The caps on this shelf work the other way round. They keep the fleece thin at the crown, where the helmet sits, and move the warmth down to your ears and brow. The Winter Helmet Liner with Glasses Holes has the most ratings in this group, over 1,000: extended oval fleece ear covers, flat seams, and a stretch fit for heads from 22.4 to 24.4 inches, in nine colors. The 2-Pack is built the same way, two to a box.

If you wear glasses, look for the holes. Three caps here have a slot on each side above the ear for the arm of your frame, so the glasses rest on your ear instead of on a fold of fleece. On the Ear Warmer Helmet Liner those slots are trimmed in reflective material, and its top is mesh for climbs that warm you up. The Ear Warmer Skull Cap with Visor adds a short brim you flip down against low winter sun. The Lightweight Warm Skull Cap folds small enough for a jersey pocket, and the Microfleece Skull Cap pairs microfleece with a mesh top.

On a job site the helmet decides. OSHA's position is that a winter liner is not prohibited under a hard hat when it is designed to work with that hat, and it recommends asking the hat's maker first. Under an electrical (Class B) helmet, a winter liner can have no metal parts at all. NIOSH puts a hat at the top of its cold weather advice because it cuts the heat your head loses, and it suggests carrying a spare, which is what the 2-Pack is for. The skull cap and liner guide goes further.

Questions

About MELASA winter skull caps and helmet liners

Will a MELASA winter skull cap fit under your bike helmet?

That is what these caps are built for. The fleece stays thin at the crown, where the helmet sits, and gets thicker at your ears. Put the cap on, then readjust the helmet strap once so the helmet sits where it did before.

Which MELASA skull caps have holes for your glasses?

Three: the Winter Helmet Liner with Glasses Holes, its 2-Pack, and the Ear Warmer Helmet Liner with Glasses Holes, where the slots are trimmed in reflective material. Slide your frame on after the cap, and the arms find their own way to your ears.

Can you wear a MELASA winter liner under your hard hat?

Ask the maker of your hard hat first. OSHA does not prohibit a winter liner that is designed to work with the helmet, and it recommends checking with the helmet's maker. On a helmet rated for electrical work, the liner has to be free of metal.
